Ecological research:

We undertake research on various aspects of marine and estuarine ecology, specialising on particular components such as water quality, invertebrates, fish and birds, as well as investigating the interrelationships between different components.  More . . .

Climate change studies:

We are developing a growing interest in the analysis of ecological and economic impacts of climate change and adaptive measures in terms of resource management and protection, both terrestrial and marine landscapes.  More . . .

Baseline studies and monitoring programmes:

We are experienced in the collection of baseline data and the design of environmental monitoring programmes to detect and understand the relevance of key ecological changes. We run observer programmes for the intensive monitoring of a variety of fisheries.  More . . .

Systems modelling:

Using expert input, we construct ecological and ecological-economic models of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems to analyse the potential consequences of future management options.  More . . .

Economic and livelihood value of ecosystems:

We are amongst the most experienced in the region in the application of resource economics techniques for the valuation of ecosystem services. We value the consumptive use of resources, recreation and tourism, ecosystem functioning, and the intangible values of biodiversity. Our valuation studies are uniquely grounded in a thorough understanding of the underlying biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. We assess of the contribution of natural resources such as fisheries to household livelihoods in subsistence-based communities. We use a range of social survey methods, often in collaboration with sociologists. We also analyse the relationships between households, natural resources and other factors.   More . . .

Conservation Policy, Economic Incentives and Financing Strategies:

We develop strategies to meet conservation and development objectives, such as systems for payments for ecosystem services.  More . . .

Integrated Conservation Planning and Strategic Environmental Assessment:

We undertake assessments of the relative importance of coastal areas and estuaries for conservation planning, management decision making and freshwater allocation. We bring a rare multidisciplinary perspective to conservation planning that takes account of economic and social opportunities and constraints as well as ecological targets. The Anchor Environmental team recognise the importance of strategic planning to guide policy formulation and implementation, and have made a contribution to policy development initiatives in this region.  More . . .

Environmental Impact Assessments

We offer skills in the running of entire EIA projects from inception to final completion as well as offering specialist input on economics, fish, birds and invertebrates in collaboration with other consultancies.  More . . .

Environmental Situation Assessments and Management Plans:

We prepare management plans for Marine Protected Areas and for estuaries, starting from a situation assessment and consultation with stakeholders to devising ecologically, socially and economically sound strategies for achieving desired objectives. We devise workable action plans. We also produce environmental management plans to assist industry in mitigating the potential impacts of development and in meeting their environmental policy objectives.  More . . .

Fisheries, Aquaculture, Natural Resource Management and Biodiversity Business:

We assist clients in assessing the status of natural resources, sustainability of existing use, and the design of optimal harvesting strategies which take the socio-economic context into account. We provide advice and assistance to new entrants and existing operators in biodiversity business such as mariculture, helping them to maximise their economic returns.  More . . .

Environmental Flow Assessments:

Anchor staff have made a major contribution to developing the method for classifying and determining the freshwater requirements of rivers and estuaries. We offer specialist expertise in the estuarine and socio-economic components as well as in the design and use of analytical tools for integrated river basin management.  More . . .

Capacity Building and Assessment:

Our strong academic background and continued association with the University of Cape Town strengthens our capacity-building efforts. We have developed and carried out training courses in marine ecology, fisheries management, resource economics, pollution economics and determination of freshwater inputs for estuaries. Anchor Environmental staff also regularly supervise postgraduate university students and teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses at UCT.   More . . .

Toxicology:

We have the expertise to run a full range of toxicity tests for evaluation of acute and chronic toxicity of effluents.  More . . .

Fisheries Observer Programme:

Anchor Environmental specialises as a Fisheries Observer Provider firm dedicated to providing quality observers for scientific research and environmental monitoring on board various fishing fleets and at designated landing sites around the South African coast.  More . . .
