The benthic macrofauna and sediment quality monitoring programme for the Atlantic 1 Mining Licence Area (Namibia) developed by Anchor is designed to assess impacts of mining on unconsolidated seabed environments and also to determine the recovery rate of mined sites was initiated shortly after mining commenced. The programme currently entails collection of in excess of 600 sediment and benthic macrofauna samples from 69 stations in water depths of between 90 and 120 m using a Van Veen grab, while water quality data are collected using CTDs. Anchor is responsible for collection, processing and analysis of all environmental data and samples collected (including identification and enumeration of benthic macrofauna), and for production of annual monitoring reports.
