Plans to further expand the operational areas of the port, and the need to establish environmental offsets in the form of artificially created sandbank areas prompted the port management authority, Transnet to commission and environmental baseline study on all remaining sandbank and mudflat habitats in the Port. Anchor Environmental were appointed to undertake the monitoring programme that included quarterly surveys of water quality (20 stations), sediment quality, microalgae and benthic invertebrates (105 stations), fish (24 stations) and birds (entire port area) in the Port of Durban over a period of two years.
